First, make sure you apply to the University of Utah. You’ll need to be accepted to both the U and your BFA program in order to enroll in the required courses.
We strongly recommend that you apply to the U by December 1. Students who apply to the University of Utah by December 1 are eligible for exceptional benefits, including the following:
automatic consideration for all university merit-based scholarships
automatic consideration for the For Utah scholarship if you submit your FAFSA by February 1 (UT residents only)
discounted tuition for non-resident students from participating states and territories through the Western Undergraduate Exchange

In the next step, we’ll provide a short list of application materials we need from you. If you are auditioning for the ATP or MTP, we’ll also give you the guidelines and requirements for your audition.
Please note: you’l be asked to submit your application materials when you schedule your audition or interview.. Make sure you have them prepared before moving on to the next step.
-
Once your application materials are prepared, you can schedule your audition or interview.
ATP & MTP Applicants: Before scheduling your audition, you will need to register and pay your $30 audition fee.* Once we have processed your payment, you’ll receive an access code for our scheduling system.
PADP, SM, & TT applicants: proceed directly to scheduling.
*Audition fees are non-refundable. You can request a fee waiver for any reason by emailing us at recruitment@theatre.utah.edu. Although we rely on audition fees to subsidize recruitment costs, we don’t want fees to be an obstacle for any student who wishes to audition.
-
After you complete your audition or interview, watch your inbox for notifications from the university and the Department of Theatre. Read them carefully, since they’ll contain instructions for confirming enrollment and declaring your major.
Remember, you can only declare a major in a BFA program if you’ve been accepted to both the university and your desired BFA program. Until you declare your major, you will not be able to enroll in courses for that program.

Your dance video should consist of 30-60 seconds of dance in whatever dance discipline you feel most confident. This may include, but is not limited to jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, or dance styles beyond American and Euro-western styles.
Please do not submit “barre work.”
Please use steps, movement, and physical vocabulary that you are familiar with and can execute well. To the best of your ability, move your body fully.
Please include at least one turn, one jump and one kick (or other suitable rotation, elevation, and extension that works for your body).
Dance media can be “self-choreographed,” but it must be a solo video of you. This can include a show, competition, or other performance so long as you are clearly featured on your own.
If you do not have a dance video you wish to use, we have provided a set of written instructions, an accompaniment file, and four videos to help you learn a short dance sequence. Follow the link below, read the instructions carefully, then use the videos to learn and perform the steps based on your experience level.
Your dance video must be submitted at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled audition.

SONGS
Students should prepare two contrasting songs. One song should be a ballad (where the piece has longer, sustained vocal lines) and one song should be an uptempo (where the vocal line moves at a conversational pace) so as to contrast style. One song should be written before 1970. This song can be either the “uptempo” or the “ballad” (student’s choice).
One song should be written after 1970 and contrast the style of the first.
Length: Each song file should be 60-90 seconds (This time limit includes the slate at the beginning of the piece and is strictly adhered to.)
Accompaniment: Students must sing to musical accompaniment, which could include live or pre -recorded accompaniment. No “a cappella” singing (meaning singing without music).

If you are auditioning in another location, please bring a backing track and a speaker.
Please bring your book of audition material (monologues and songs), as we may ask to hear other options.
